My Memories of September 11, 2001

One question that I always hear when someone asks about history. “Where were you when “it” happened?” Well when the planes struck the World Trade Center I was sitting in math class. The teacher walked in the door and said “We just got a phone call, terrorists have blown up the World Trade Center Towers in New York City.” The way he made his comment was very arrogant but all I could think of was the people inside the buildings. Businessmen and women, officers, security guards, fire fighters, tourists, family and friends.

I personally had family in New York City but more specifically Manhattan almost right where the terrorist attacks took place. What made it even more difficult was that they were police officers. Throughout the rest of the day my mind was in so many different places. My entire family scrambled to somehow get word about our family. We all called and called but because of the downed telephone lines we couldn’t call down to them and they couldn’t call either.

The frantic and overwhelming news coverage brought tears to my eyes. It was on every channel, so escapable just like the terror that has come to many families around the world.

For my family we were lucky enough to all be okay. After days of frantic waiting, my grandparents came through with the message “Hi, NY Family O.K Love G & G” I utter joy that I felt at that second knowing they were all okay was amazing but then I remembered all the other families who had lost their loved ones.

I hope that all of you and your families are doing well and if you did lose someone in these tragic and horrific attacks. I’m sorry and I wish you all the best in your recovery. This tragedy was senseless and we lost many wonderful people but never let them die! This is something that I’ve written for the family, relatives, and friends who lost someone on September 11, 2001.

A Prayer for the World;
Our world was created for peace and love,
Yet we have denied it.
Let us all reach out our hands,
To our friends and enemies.
Let there be no more hate and evil,
Just leave peace and love.
Hold your friends close,
But hold your enemies closer.
Do not harbour flame of hate,
But let it die quietly in the night.
