Introducing our reporters…

Ashley

reporterHi, my name is Ashley and I am 15 years old. I live in Virginia in a little town out in the sticks. I am very excited about having the opportunity to write my likes and dislikes in a column to help you all. I consider myself a very normal and average teenage girl. I love guys, clothes, and friends and hate homework, school and chores.

I enjoy hanging out with my friends or just staying home and doing some reading. A boy enthusiast, I seriously doubt. I like guys but I am not obsessed with them. Along with every other teenage girl in the world I love to shop and hate any kind of homework. I will be doing reviews of cosmetics, makeup, fashion and some other stuff. I will let you know what I think is hot & what’s not.     * Ashley *

Eric

Eric picHi, my name is Eric, I live just outside of Philadelphia, PA, I am 19 years old. I work as a hair dresser, or hair stylist — whatever you want to call me, I don’t care. Why do I do what I do? WelI, I grew up in my mom’s salon as a kid, I am creative and I like making people feel good when they like the way they look. Anyway, I will be writing a column about “Hair Tips and Tricks” and stuff like that. I think you will learn something since most of what I know is stuff I have learned from working in the business. I will have an article out soon with tips for all hair types. I just wanted to introduce myself. See ya soon. – Eric –

~ Product Review by Ashley ~

Oil of Olay foundation stick: I recently bought the Oil of Olay foundation stick. I think that this product is very convenient and portable for any touchups that may be needed through out the day. One downside to this product is that it is very fragile and breaks easily.

Other than that one draw back I love this product. The mistake I made was I pick a color that was too dark. Make sure that before you buy it you test it or at least look at the label on the bottom to see if it is close to your natural skin color. Please don’t try and get a color too dark because with this product it will definitely show. I advise the use of this product very much. I give it three stars .

Rating scale:

Can’t live without it!

Amy writes Hi, this is Amy. I found a new product (new to me that is). I really liked it so I thought I would review it. I have very long curly hair and it is often either frizzy from brushing it out too much or I don’t know what to do with the curls that nature gave me, until now.

Pantene Pro-V Scrunching Gel – Curl Defining: Use this product on your hair when it is still damp after shampooing. It shapes and holds your curls and it isn’t sticky or shiny looking like some of the older products for curly hair. It wasn’t the cheapest of the “scrunching gels” but not the most expensive either. And since it comes in a 200 gram size tube, it probably lasts a long time. If you don’t have curly hair, it also comes in other formulas. I would rate it with four stars!

Fashion Reviews

Fashion animation Summer Fashions — Yep, they’re out already!

This summer bright, solid-colored bathing suits will be hot. Last year was all about flowers and plaids. I think a lot of warm colors will be used like orange, red and yellow.

Victoria Secret has some cute suits in the latest catalog. These bathing suits sun from
$50- $100. If you would rather spend less, I would suggest American Eagle Outfitters (www.ae.com) or A&N. These particular suits run between $20- $40.

Don’t think that these are the only stores, a lot of little surf shops carry adorable suits.

  • If your shampoo isn’t lathering, your hair most likely isn’t wet enough! Add water, not more shampoo.
  • You do NOT have to switch shampoos (some say to change them weekly), you only need to change products if your hair goes through a change like if you perm it or color it.
  • Wash your hair with warm water! Don’t use cold, even if your best bud says it is good for your hair. Shampoos are formulated to work best with warm water.
  • To eliminate frizz or to define curls use a wave enhancing shampoo like Back to Basics Get Curly Shampoo.
  • Don’t pour shampoo onto your head! Pour it into your hands then work it through your hair.
  • Dandruff shampoos — Massage them into your scalp, then leave the suds on for a few minutes before rinsing.
  • If greasy hair is a problem, use a deep cleansing shampoo like Clairol Herbal Essences Clarifying Shampoo.
  • Curly hair is often dry, so use a moisturizing shampoo like Neutrogena Clean Shampoo Replenishing.
  • Before conditioning, squeeze excess water from your hair (please be gentle) soaking wet strands don’t absorb conditioner very well.
  • To strengthen strands try a protein-based conditioner like Pantene Pro-V Daily Treatment Conditioner.
  • AFTER conditioning rinse those locks with cool water to boost the circulation in your scalp and to increase the shine of your locks.
  • You’ll know conditioner is all washed out when your hair feels slightly slippery.
  • DON’T pile your hair on top of your head (if it is long), this will only create knots.
  • DON’T brush wet hair, it can tear your hair, use a comb, more on that in Hair Tips.

Eric’s Tools Of The Trade

walking brush

  • Get a blow-dryer with 1500 watts max. Higher voltages can fry your hair. The hair dryer should also have a built-in heat sensor to protect from burning.
  • A flattening attachment like Champion Straight-On Straightening Pic will turn most dryers into straighteners.
  • When heat styling, start with the lowest setting, hot appliances will damage hair. (I can’t say this enough).
  • A hot air brush blows heated air through built-in bristles, giving you the benefits of a blow-dryer, round brush and curling iron in one tool… I use this on many clients. Julbere Blue Lightning Hot Air Brush is available in most stores & is one I recommend.
  • If you plan to trim your own bangs, invest in a good pair of shears, paper scissors just don’t cut it. (To trim your own bangs, twist the hair together into one piece then snip into the ends in a zigzag motion. Brush out the hair & cut the longer pieces to match the shorter ones.) More on hair cutting tips coming soon.
  • Every two weeks clean your brushes by soaking them in warm, soapy water for a few minutes. Rinse & air dry.
  • A broken-in brush is easier to work with than a new one.
  • To break in a new brush, heat the bristles with a blow dryer to soften them for easier styling.
  • Make sure your hair is dry before using curling irons or irons to straighten. These are not meant to dry your hair, but to finish your look, use the last.
  • NEVER use a metal comb which can tear hair, use a plastic one with large teeth, you can buy a good one for a dollar!

writingMy first topic is going to be about your Most Embarrassing Moment, we have all had them. Let’s compare and see who really had the most embarrassing. I am also looking for your Worse Date stories, so send them in and we will pick out a bunch and post them on this page. Thanks!

Embarrassing Moment s by Brit…

We’ve all experienced it. Whether we’ve laughed until we’ve cried, or turned bright red. You just can’t go through life without having experienced an embarrassing moment. I’m sure all the girls have laughed at the Why Me? column they feature in Teen Magazine.

Real life teens send in their most embarrassing stories, and Teen publishes them. Well, for a certain girl and even boy, that moment may have been life wrecking or mortifying. But we just sit back and laugh so hard at something that was humiliating for them. Eventually, we’ll all look back on these moments and laugh. Some of us may even laugh at them the moment they happen.

These embarrassing moments will forever flourish in our memories. They’re the type of things you never forget, kind of like your best friend, or your first kiss. You may have fallen up the steps at school or had a booker hanging out of your nose while you were talking to your crush. It always seems that when it happens you are the talk of the town, but are somehow forgotten when someone else does something to embarrass themselves. A life saver is what I would call that person. You are suddenly the person everyone knows, but to you, you are the person everyone makes fun of. You are mysteriously saved, and at least one person will always remember what happened, YOU!

As if it’s not bad enough to have experienced something embarrassing. Having a really bad date can top the list. Your date might have spilled his soda on your dress. There’s nothing like walking around town the rest of the night with a huge brown spot on your brand new dress.

My Bad Date, not, but Embarrassing Moment:

I have yet to have a bad date. It hasn’t happened yet. But I do have some embarrassing moments. I remember when I started dating my boyfriend, we weren’t quite as close as we are now, so we felt kind of awkward around each other. We were going to a carnival one night. It was one of the carnivals where the whole school is there. He had just parked his car and we began walking. I was wearing these really cute platform sandals, they were kind of uncomfortable. We were getting closer to the carnival and my boyfriend met up with one of his friends. The next thing I know I’m sitting on the sidewalk, scraping rocks off of my legs. I had tripped over a dip in the sidewalk. To make things worse, I had just made a great impression on one of his friends. “Yea, Hi, I’m his klutzy girlfriend.” I guess we all need humor in our lives though. ~Brit~

Here are some of the Most Embarrassing Moments that were already sent to Teen Health Secrets:

My embarrassing moment was when I was in math class and everyone saw that I stuffed my bra because the tissues I used were coming out when I was called to go write some answers on the blackboard. That was really embarrassing! – Annie in Denver.

My boyfriend just got on the net and his own e-mail address. He gave it to me, but I misspelled his addy…. WOW! HUGE mistake. The letter was really mushy saying “I love you and you’re the only one for me.” Wow, was I surprised when “Laura B.” e-mailed me back saying that she loved me too. Apparently, I had e-mailed a girl my love letter… and my phone number. – Kelly, in Delaware

Okay, this is really embarrassing, but here goes… My friend was having a pool party, we have them a lot in Florida. There were about 15 guys there and about 17 girls. I was having my period and was using tampons. We decided to have lunch, so I put shorts on over my bathing suit after I changed my tampon. This guy I really had a crush on was at the party and while he was talking to me and he said “Hey, you have a string hanging out of your shorts.” Ugh!!! I was in such a rush that I didn’t notice or check it first! – Jen in Orlando, Florida

Worst Dates
We would love to hear from you & about your nightmare date.
If we like your story, we will include it in this “Worst Date” section.

Brit picYour date picks you up, and you two head off for a nice cozy dinner for two and then you guys are off to a movie. So far so good, right? Not quite. Your date picks you up, but he picks you up late. The two off you go to dinner at a romantic restaurant of your choice. You guys are seated and you take your order. While you wait for dinner, you two talk about life, school, friends, everything. Dinner arrives, and you and your date sit side by side and share what you’ve order between the two of you. Just when you think you’ve forgiven him for picking you up late, he reaches for his drink, but knocks yours over, spilling it on your brand new outfit. “Just great,” you think to yourself. He apologizes a million times, and you finally forgive him.

Horror story is how you tell it to your friends. You never go out on a date with that guy again. Bad dates, just about every guy or girl has had one(not everyone). You think you’re headed off to an excellent date with a really great guy. The next thing you know the entire night has been ruined by some of his little accidents. Not exactly what I would call perfect. Guys and girls go through a tough time when they’re teenagers. Sometimes a bad date can seem like a horrible experience, when in reality it’s just an experience you are bound to remember. Little mistakes like these can liven up your life(although it may not seem like it). Your date learns from his mistakes, and you learn that what happened was not the end of the world. You may turn red from embarrassment, but you soon get over the fact that, hey IT HAPPENS TO EVERYONE. Don’t let a little problem like a bad date, get in the way of a normal teenage life. Because a bad date is part of a normal teenage life. Don’t get me wrong, just because you may not have had a bad date, doesn’t mean you are not a typical teenager. I haven’t had a bad date, but I feel pretty normal. Just remember that everyone mistake or bump in the road is a lesson learned in life. Don’t take it so seriously, in a year, you’ll laugh over the whole situation. Whenever you have that bad date, just remember to smile!
~Brit 🙂

Send us your worst date story and let’s see whose is really the worst.
