This is a question I get asked from readers e-mail’s. It stuns me at times to see that sex education in the USA is so poor that teens and twenty year olds don’t know the answers to these commonly asked questions. I’m not making fun of anyone, but I think it’s important to talk about this openly and hopefully clear up any myths or misconceptions. I will explain the answers with more detail on the pages to follow. But for now…

Can I get pregnant during unprotected sex if the guy pulls out before he ejaculates.

YES! Of Course!

Can I get pregnant if I have sex during my period.

YES!

Can I get pregnant while having sex in the shower or bath, or hot tub.

YES!

Condoms are 100% safe.

WRONG!

Can I get pregnant while taking birth control pills?

YES!

It’s safe to have sex as soon as you’re on the pill

WRONG!

Can I get pregnant if I miss one pill?

YES!

Can I get pregnant using the sponge with a spermicide.

YES!

These are real questions, some may sound silly, but they may answer someone else’s questions. This is just a quick guide, there are variables that are too numerous to mention.

Can I get pregnant if I douche immediately after sex?

YES!

Can I get pregnant if I don’t have an orgasm during sex?

YES!

Can I get pregnant if I don’t have sex (sexual intercourse)?

Can I get pregnant if my partner and I only have oral sex and he ejaculates while wearing a condomn?

No

Can I get pregnant if semen lands on clothing like my jeans?

Very, very unlikely. See the FAQ pages.

Can I get pregnant if I take someone else’s pill?

YES!

Can I get pregnant if I am breast-feeding?

YES! (you might ovulate!)

Can I get pregnant if my partner and I engage in ‘dry sex‘?

Yes, but it’s not very likely . Keep your clothes on (and a spermicide on hand). See FAQs Index. Wear a condom and save yourself some worry!!! I AM NOT promoting this activity as a form of “safe sex”. Birth control used correctly works. (There, that was in response to one unhappy reader who should have called his local planned parenthood). Yes, you can wear a condom during dry sex. Hey, you can wear a wetsuit too. Let’s not get too wacky here. If you really don’t know the answers to these questions, maybe you’re not mature enough to be having sex. Sex has consequences. Many young people are able to handle birth control correctly, but with 1 million unplanned pregnancies in the US a year… it makes some people wonder.

• The point here is a hopefully obvious. Contraception works if you use it correctly, every time you have sexual intercourse! Abstinence also prevents pregnancy. What method suits your own situation is a matter of choice. If you are not in a monogamous relationship, ALWAYS use a condom. And of course, get tested for HIV and other STDs before you have a sexual relationship with a new partner. Make sure he or she gets tested too.

• If you are trying to get pregnant, see the Fertility section. Generally speaking, most women will get pregnant within one year of not birth control. If you do not conceive, see your GYN who will most likely refer you to a fertility specialist. Good luck to you.
